The Student Union of ÅAU arranges a voluntary park clean-up event in Vårdberget (Åbo) on Wednesday morning, 15 September, between 8 and 10 a.m.
The studies, freshers’ celebrations, and parties have begun, and the traces are now clearly visible in the parks in Åbo. The Student Union of ÅAU organises a voluntary clean-up event in Vårdberget’s park in Åbo. Everyone can come and help to clean the park and your help will be appreciated! The Student Union has ordered cleaning supplies which will be delivered by Åbo city for all our volunteers. You don’t have to register for the event, and you can come anywhere between 8 and 10 a.m.
It has been amazing to get to know new people and even meet up with old friends during the first weeks of the academic year, but we should also remember to take care of our common outdoor environments and take our trash to the trash bin.
Remember that the parks are ”outside living rooms” for us all, and everyone should be able to enjoy their time in clean parks!
There is accommodation available in Åbo. Some are available for new residents immediately, some starting from October.
You can also contact our Service Expert at kansli@studentkaren.fi.

We are sorry to inform you that the Student Union of ÅAU has decided to cancel the 102nd Annual Ball that would have taken place on 24 September 2021.
Due to the situation with the pandemic, we didn’t think it would have been possible to arrange the Annual Ball safely and responsibly.
The next Annual Ball will be held on 19 February 2022 if possible.

The Covid pandemic has forced students and staff to adapt to distance teaching and learning to a much higher degree than before. In the autumn we can hopefully return to campus, but the digital solutions are here to stay.
Digitalization as such doesn’t solve all problems, but it can be used as a support in developing equal and accessible education. The possibility to take part in courses between the Åbo and Vasa campuses, and the possibility to Zoom in from home when you are ill, should still be available after the pandemic is over. We at the Student Union have gathered our thoughts about the digitalization of education in five main points, that we believe should be a priority to make studying easier.
1) All course materials should be available in digital form.
2) Support services like study psychologist and study advisor should be available online if needed.
3) The information that is now available in Peppi and on studiehandboken.abo.fi should be integrated. Students should only need to “log into ÅAU” to find relevant day to day information. Now it’s unclear what is listed on the intra page, the e-mail or some other platform.
4) Digitalization should be a support form for teaching and learning, no one should be forced to study only from home. Pedagogical aspects need to come before technical ones. The solutions also need to be adapted for students with special needs. A special needs educator with expertise in higher education should be consulted when the digital solutions are planned.
5) Equal possibilities to study. The university cannot assume that all students have their own computers with internet connections, or the possibility to study from home. Computer classes are still needed in the future.
NB! Information updated 16 June 2021!
