The Student Union of ÅAU’s (ÅAS) 104th annual ball got rescheduled to 23 September.
Due to external reasons beyond ÅAS’s control, the Board has, in its meeting 18 January 2023, decided to reschedule ÅAS’s 104th annual ball to 23 September 2023. The annual ball will be organised in Vasa as previously planned. We will publish more information about the annual ball during the spring.
The traditional procession of the flags will be organised 18 February, on Per Brahe’s birthday, in Åbo.

The service points in Åbo and Vasa are closed between 13 December 2022 and 15 January 2023.
You can visit the service points on Monday the 12th December during opening hours, before we close for the Christmas holidays.
We open again on the 16th of January 2023.

The Student Union of ÅAU’s (ÅAS) Student Union Council has on their meeting on 1 December 2022, elected a new Presidium for the Student Union Council, a new Student Union Board, and a new Chair for the Financial Board. Furthermore, were a Member and an Expert Member for the Financial Board elected.
Nicolina Nordman, a 24-year-old student in Social Sciences, was elected as the Chair of the Board 2023. Nordman has been active in the subject association SF-Klubben, been a member of the Student Union Council and a student representative in the Faculty Council for the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics.
Nordman writes in her application that she thinks it is extremely important that ÅAS makes the students’ voice heard because of the Parliamentary Elections and Åbo Akademi University’s property plan. Norman also wants to concentrate on the students’ well-being and increase ÅAS visibility in social media.
The Vice-Chair 2023 is Kajsa Viitamäki and the other Board Members are Pernilla Bagge, Vanessa Björklund, Leia Boullenger, Amanda Byskata, Casimir Ruohomaa and Lina Sjöberg. Bagge, Björklund and Sjöberg are going to work in Vasa, and Boullenger, Byskata, Ruohomaa and Viitamäki in Åbo.
New Presidium, and new Chair, Expert Member and Member of the Financial Board
The new Chair of the Student Union Council is Ines Latvala (De Rättvisa), the first Vice-Chair is Jonne Kunnas (FNT-listan), and the second Vice-Chair is Herman Björk (Gemensamma Vasa).
Samuel Skrifvars was elected as the Chair of the Financial Board. Rasmus Kupi was elected as a Member and Robert Wetterstein as an Expert Member of the Financial Board.

Do you want to coordinate and organize one of the most traditional event in Åbo? We are looking for a coordinator of Shrove Tuesday!
Shrove Tuesday falls on February 21 2023. As coordinator, you will have the opportunity to develop the event even further as you will oversee the overall coordination of the event. The assignment demands the ability to cooperate and take initiative, the ability to organize and good stress management skills. The coordinator will receive an emolument of 500 euros. The job requires knowledge of Swedish and preferably Finnish.
The application can be sent to Board member Esther Djupsund (esther@studentkaren.fi). Deadline for application is on 12 December. The Board of the Student Union will select a suitable candidate on 29 November, and the newly elected coordinator will begin working on the coordination of Shrove Tuesday immediately.
The Student Union of ÅAU’s (ÅAS) Council has elected Fanny Jonasson and Erik Östman as student representatives to the Åbo Akademi University Board, for its 2023–2024 term. The Åbo Akademi University Board is the highest decision-making body at ÅAU and consists of ten members.
Fanny Jonasson studies law at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Economics (FSE). Jonasson has gathered experience of ÅAU’s administration as a member of the Faculty Council at FSE. She has acted as Chair of the Board and Member of the Board responsible for study-related matters for the subject association Stadga. Jonasson has also been active and committed to doing advocacy work, both within ÅAU, and on a national level.
Erik Östman studies chemical engineering at the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FNT) and has been active in the subject association Kemistklubben. Östman is now the vice chair of the Student Union Board and the board member responsible for higher education policy. He has been a member of the FNT Faculty Council and has improved the contact between students and staff.
”We want to point out the students’ perspective, for example in the planning of the premises on campus, flexible study alternatives for students in various life situations, the well-being of students, and a safe and inclusive university. We want to do our best to represent all students in all matters”, answers Östman and Jonasson when asked what their goals for their term are.
Åbo Akademi University has now published the results of the academic election [link to ÅAU’s intranet] which took place on Wednesday 9 November.

Would you be excited to participate in organising the Student Union of ÅAU’s (ÅAS) next annual ball?
The coordinator for ÅAS 104th annual ball will be Alexandra Westerlund. The annual ball will take place in Vasa in February 2023. Alexandra is now looking for members for their annual ball committee that will help make the annual ball festivities unforgettable.
We would like to have both of the Student Union’s ”hometowns”, Vasa and Åbo, be represented in the committee. Write an application and send it in no later than Sunday, 13 November, at 11.59 p.m. to ÅAS member of the Board Esther Djupsund esther@studentkaren.fi. The Board will choose the members for the committee together with the annual ball coordinator.
Please not that some proficiency in Swedish is needed because the documentation of previous annual balls is in Swedish.
The service point in Vasa will only be open two days a week from the beginning of November. This is so the personnel in Vasa can better support the Board in their position, increase the amount of advocacy work, and support The Student Union of ÅAU’s (ÅAS) sub-associations in Vasa.
The service point in Havtornen will be open on Mondays and Thursdays from noon to 3 p.m. ÅAS’s Service Expert Amanda will be there and is happy to answer any questions. You can also send an email to havtornen@studentkaren.fi. It is also possible to book an appointment with Amanda via email if you have questions or errands you would like to handle in person – both students and associations are welcome.
The service point will be closed on 26 October and 1–3 November 2022.

The Student Union will flag at half-mast on Friday, October 7, in Åbo
The Student Union buildning Kåren in Åbo will flag at half-mast on Friday, October 7, to honor the memory of a departed student. Our thoughts go to grieving family, relatives and friends. Those closest in the study community have been informed and offered support.
