The Student Union joins the call to action to dismantle antiblackness in Finnish universities
The Student Union Board has on it’s meeting 8 December 2021 decided to sign the call to action “Dismantling Antiblackness in Finnish Universities”.
You can read and sign the call to action here (in English, Swedish and Finnish).
The call to action includes measures that should be taken by university staff in research, teaching and university services, as well as for students, associations, and student unions. Student organizations signing the call to action commit to for example making an explicit stand and taking concrete action on antiblackness on campus and interrogating the absence of black and racialised students at events and as service users.
The Student Union encourages students, associations, other student unions and Åbo Akademi University to join the call to action!

Veera Granroth elected as the Chair of the Board 2022
The Student Union Council has, on their meeting on 2 December, elected a new Presidium for the Student Union Council, a new Student Union Board, and a new Vice-Chair for the Financial Board. Furthermore were two Expert Members for the Financial Board elected.
Veera Granroth, a Political Sciences student, was elected as the Chair of the Board 2022. Granroth has been the Vice-Chair of the Board in 2021 and also had academic affairs as her area of responsibility. The Vice-Chair 2022 is Erik Östman and the other Board Members Emma Andersson, Esther Djupsund, Adam Lahtinen, Axel Pakarinen, Lina Sjöskog, and Rudolf Tommos.
The new Chair of the Student Union Council is Rasmus Kupi (De Rättvisa). The first Vice-Chair is Jonne Kunnas (FNT-listan), and the second Vice-Chair is Marie Lövholm (Gemensamma Vasa).
Laura-Eliisa Leino was elected as the Vice-Chair of the Financial Board. The Financial Board got also two Expert Members – Riina Forsman got elected as a new Expert Member and Jarkko Kaplin will continue as an Expert Member of the Financial Board.

Student representatives needed to the Equality Committee of ÅAU
The Equality Committee of ÅAU consists of members of the staff and students at the University. There are two student representatives who both have substitutes. The representatives for the students are elected by the Student Union Board.
The committee discusses and takes initiatives regarding all aspects of Equality, Equal treatment and accessibility. The committee is involved in the writing of the Equality Plan and Equal Treatment Plan for ÅAU. You can read more and fill out your application here. The Student Union Board will hold short interviews in Zoom with all candidates. The deadline for applying is Sunday 12 December.
Do you want to coordinate and organize the most traditional event in Åbo? We are looking for a coordinator of Shrove Tuesday!
Shrove Tuesday falls on 1st of March 2022. As coordinator, you will have the opportunity to develop the event even further as you will oversee the overall coordination of the event. The assignment demands the ability to cooperate and take initiative, the ability to organize and good stress management skills. The coordinator will receive an emolument of 500 euros.
For more information, contact the Chair of the Board Joonas Karlsson (so@studentkaren.fi). Deadline for application is on the 7th of December. The Board of the Student Union will select a suitable candidate on the 8th of December, and the newly elected coordinator will begin working on the coordination of Shrove Tuesday immediately.

The Board of Åbo Akademi University has, on a board meeting on the 1st of November, decided to dismiss Moira von Wright as the Rector for Åbo Akademi University.
The cooperation with the university will continue regardless of the changes in the University leadership. The Student Union will continue to supervise student interests as before.
To be able to solve the problems at the university, it is important to reflect on them and have an open dialogue with each other. We have to identify the reasons behind the problems before we can achieve an improvement.
Clear communication is key when it comes to students managing their studies and feeling welcome on campus. The Student Union is happy to collaborate with the current leadership in order to further develop communication about reforms, as well as everyday routines so that students are both involved, and are up to speed with current happenings.

The Student Union of Åbo Akademi University has elected a new Student Union Council for the period 1.1.2022-31.12.2023. 25 councillors with respective deputy councillors were chosen.
76 candidates ran in the elections.
1077 votes were cast of which 21 votes were rejected, which gives a voting activity percentage of 21.35%.
Based on the preliminary election results the council seats will be divided as follows:

MK-Listan (MKL): 5
Åbo-Vasa Socialdemokratiska Studerande (ÅVSS): 0

These results are preliminary. The result will be determined by the election committees meeting 4th of November.
