Holiday Greetings from ÅAS' Board
The year is coming to an end, and we at the Student Union Board of 2023 want to express our gratitude. The year has been filled with exciting happenings! In the spring, there was the parliamentary election, and all the student unions lobbied for an increase in study grants (but the work continues...). On the ÅAU level, our efforts to extend the lunch break have proven successful, and as of the fall of 2024, the lunch break will be prolonged from 45 minutes to 60 minutes. Another focus this year has been making studies more inclusive for transgender individuals.
In addition to advocacy work, both new and traditional events have been organized. In February, student association training and Shrove Tuesday celebrations took place in both Åbo and Vasa. In March, student association fairs, blood donation drives, and panel discussions ahead of the parliamentary elections were featured. In April, student association and project grants were awarded, and outstanding teachers received roses based on nominations from students. The spring semester was concluded with the May Day Evening festivities on Vårdberget in Åbo and donning the Topelius Statue with a student cap in Vasa. In the fall, the 104th anniversary of ÅAS was celebrated in Vasa, and in Åbo the Lilla Wappen event, where we turned our caps upside down, took place. In Vasa, both Utissitz and pyjama parties for freshers were organized in collaboration with SSHV. A special association training on anti-racism and neuropsychiatric diagnoses was conducted via Zoom. In November, it was time for the Student Union Council Elections, and a new Council was elected. Additionally, a climate evening was organized in collaboration with Biologica. Independence Day parades were arranged in both Åbo and Vasa, and the year ended with a party at Kåren, featuring the entertainment of the comedy group KAJ, Bängerbingo, and DJ Sigge. A big thank you to all the student associations for the voluntary work you do; it is thanks to you that ÅAU has a vibrant student life. Also, thanks to all student representatives for the important work you do – together, we make ÅAU a bit better. The Board is now going on a Holiday break, and the new Board will begin their work in week 2 of 2024. Enjoy the holidays, take a break from studying, and gather energy for the spring semester. We wish you all Happy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year. Take care of yourselves!
